The UK bus manufacturing sector took a major step forward on 13 March, as industry leaders and Metro Mayors gathered for the first-ever UK Bus Manufacturing Panel. The initiative aims to support British bus production, strengthen local economies, and accelerate the shift toward zero-emission transport.
Held at the Canon Medical Arena in Sheffield, the event brought together key industry players, including representatives from Alexander Dennis, the Urban Transport Group, the Confederation of Passenger Transport, and local government leaders. Local Transport Minister Simon Lightwood hosted the event, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to modernising public transport.
Driving Growth in British Bus Manufacturing
The UK Bus Manufacturing Panel has been created to ensure that British-built buses remain at the forefront of innovation and sustainability. Transport Minister Simon Lightwood highlighted the importance of supporting the sector:
“It was great to kick off our first bus manufacturing expert panel today, bringing together leading bus manufacturers, Metro Mayors, and industry experts to focus on cleaner air and improved transport across the country.”
Lightwood emphasised that this initiative is about more than just buses. By strengthening UK manufacturing, the country can create high-quality vehicles, generate new jobs, and improve regional economies. He stressed that the Government is placing skilled manufacturers and local leaders at the heart of a zero-emission future.
Key Topics Discussed at the Panel
Industry experts and policymakers explored several critical topics during the panel discussions, including:
- Maintaining the UK’s leadership in bus manufacturing
- Advancing zero-emission bus production
- Creating more job opportunities in the sector
- Enhancing accessibility and inclusivity in public transport
Jason Prince, Director of the Urban Transport Group, highlighted the UK’s potential in the zero-emission bus market:
“The UK has a successful history of building buses and has the potential to be a global leader when it comes to manufacturing zero-emission buses. This new Panel will help secure the UK’s strong bus manufacturing position and deliver new jobs, greener buses, cleaner air, and regional economic growth.”
What’s Next for the UK Bus Industry?
The launch of this panel comes as the UK Government progresses the Bus Services Bill, which is expected to significantly reshape the bus industry. If passed, the bill will:
- Give local leaders greater control over bus services
- Accelerate the transition away from diesel and petrol buses
- Ensure all new buses are zero-emission by 2030
As part of its commitment to improving public transport, the Government has pledged £1 billion to enhance bus services across the country.
With strong collaboration between industry experts, government leaders, and local manufacturers, the UK Bus Manufacturing Panel is set to play a key role in the future of sustainable transport and economic growth.
